Description
Ask around and you will find that a lot of people have a little jar of Tiger Balm in a drawer, often one they inherited from a parent. It is a strong-smelling herbal ointment you rub into tight, tired muscles, and this is the white version in the small 19g size.
What is in it
- Cajuput oil 13.0% w/w
- Camphor 11.0% w/w
- Levomenthol 8.0% w/w
- Clove oil 1.5% w/w
Together they give the familiar cool-then-warm tingle and that unmistakable scent.
Who can use it, and for what
According to its product information, adults and children over 2 can use it for temporary relief of minor muscular aches and pains. Adults only can also use it for tension headache, the kind that comes on when your head, neck and shoulder muscles tense up after tiredness, overwork or emotional strain. If you are not sure your headache is a tension headache, the leaflet suggests asking your doctor or pharmacist.
Using it well
A little goes a long way. Massage a small amount into the skin over the tight area. For headaches, people usually rub it into the temples, the back of the neck and the shoulders, keeping well away from the eyes. Wash your hands afterward. The 19g jar suits spot use rather than large areas, and it slips easily into a bag or desk drawer.
Cautions
It is strongly aromatic, so read the pack information if you have sensitive skin. Do not apply to broken skin, or use it with a heating pad or tight bandage. Keep it out of reach of children, as camphor can be harmful if swallowed. A sudden, severe headache, or one with fever, a stiff neck, confusion or weakness, needs urgent medical care. So do headaches that are new for you or changing pattern.
