Shopping for a mattress when you’re sore is its own kind of tiring. Every brand promises perfect support, and lying on a showroom bed for five minutes tells you very little. Here’s what the SweetNight Island Hybrid actually offers, so you can judge whether it fits how you sleep.
The feel
Island is a medium mattress that combines springs (SweetNight’s Dynamic Coil system) with foam, under a soft knitted cover. You get some bounce from the coils and some contouring from the foam. The support is zoned in three sections, with focus on the shoulders, hips and lower back.
Who it tends to suit
- Side sleepers who want shoulders and hips to sink in a bit while the coils hold the rest
- People who change position through the night
- Couples, since the coil-and-foam build is designed to limit motion transfer
- Warm sleepers: air moves through the coil layer, and gel-infused foam is designed to absorb body heat
It also includes bamboo charcoal foam, which SweetNight describes as hypoallergenic and odor-absorbing.
Sizes and thickness
Full (53 x 75 in), Queen (60 x 80 in), King (76 x 80 in) and California King (72 x 84 in), in 10, 12, 14 or 16 inches thick. Some combinations sell out. It works with standard bed frames.
Arrival and trial
It ships rolled and compressed. Unbox it in the room where it will live and give it 72 hours to expand fully, so plan another place to sleep for the first night or two. There’s a 100-night trial (sleep on it at least 30 nights before returning) and a 10-year limited warranty on defects such as a sag over 1 inch. Comfort preference isn’t covered by the warranty, which is what the trial is for.
If you prefer a firm bed, a medium feel may not be right. And if back pain is severe, keeps getting worse or wakes you every night, talk to a clinician before assuming the mattress is the cause.
