About this product

A plug-in heating pad is lovely on the sofa and useless at your desk, in the car or on a shift. ThermaCare Lower Back and Hip Heat Wraps are made for those times: a thin wrap that warms itself and stays warm for hours under your clothes.

How the heat works

Inside the wrap are small heat cells containing iron, activated carbon, salt and water. Open the pack and they react with the air, so there’s nothing to plug in or microwave. The wrap reaches full temperature in about 30 minutes and holds roughly 40°C (about 104°F) for up to 8 hours. It’s drug-free: the warmth is the whole product.

Wearing one

The wrap is shaped for the lower back and hip and fastens with a Velcro closure. It’s flexible and low-profile enough to wear discreetly under clothing while you work, travel or get on with the day. The material is soft and described as allergy-friendly.

This pack holds two single-use wraps. ThermaCare’s directions suggest wearing one for up to 8 hours a day on two to three days in a row, so a pack covers two sessions. Once a wrap is used, it can’t be reactivated.

Rules worth following

  • Don’t wear it while sleeping.
  • Don’t put it on broken or irritated skin.
  • Don’t use it if you can’t sense heat properly, for example because of diabetes or nerve damage.
  • Don’t exceed 8 hours in any 24-hour period.
  • It’s for adults; not for children unless a healthcare professional advises it.
  • Check with a healthcare professional first if you’ve been told to avoid heat.

When to get advice instead

ThermaCare says to seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, follow an injury, or are no better or worse after 7 days. Back pain with leg weakness, numbness in the groin, bladder changes or fever needs urgent attention.

The free Pain Check-Up can help you understand what your back and hip are telling you, and the pelvic, hip and groin pain groups are a place to share what helps on long days.
