Description
Not every sore morning needs a new mattress. Sometimes your bed is just a bit too firm, or has worn unevenly, and a layer of memory foam on top is enough to make it kinder to your hips and shoulders. This topper from The Foam People is made for one specific, hard-to-shop-for size: the 2ft6 shorty small single.
Size check first
It measures 75 cm × 175 cm and is 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep. Shorty beds are common in cabin beds, bunk beds and compact rooms, but sizes vary, so measure your mattress before ordering. If you want a more noticeable change in feel, the same topper comes in 2-inch (5 cm) and 3-inch (7.5 cm) depths. One inch is the subtlest option.
How it feels
Memory foam softens and shapes itself to you, so the parts that press hardest, usually shoulders and hips, sink in a little. The Foam People say this eases pressure points and supports spinal alignment. The cover is a plush, textured bubble fabric with a stretch zip.
Keeping it in place
Toppers that slide around are a nightly annoyance. This one has an anti-slip base and elastic straps that go around your mattress, so it should not shift or bunch.
One drawback to know
The maker states plainly that it has no cooling properties. Memory foam can hold heat, so if you tend to sleep hot, this may not be the best choice for you.
Back pain and beds
A softer surface can feel more comfortable, but it does not suit everyone with back pain. If your back or neck pain is ongoing, a clinician can help you think about what sleep surface fits you. Back pain that wakes you every night, or comes with fever or leg weakness, should be checked.
The free Pain Check-Up can help you understand morning aches, and the sleep and fatigue groups are great for bedding advice.
