FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor – 1 Sensor

Overview

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor is part of Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system. The small round sensor is applied to the back of the upper arm with the supplied applicator and measures glucose in the interstitial fluid continuously for up to 15 days, after which it stops and must be replaced. Readings, trend arrows and optional high and low glucose alarms are shown on the FreeStyle LibreLink app on a compatible smartphone or on the FreeStyle Libre 2 Reader; Lir Pharmacy also lists it as authorised for use with the Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery system. No reader or phone is included.

Lir lists it as indicated for adults and children aged 2 years and over with diabetes. It is water-resistant to 1 metre for 30 minutes, needs no routine calibration, and is single-use: once removed or expired it cannot be restarted. Lir’s page says routine finger-prick testing is not needed, with the manufacturer’s note that finger-prick testing may still be required in certain circumstances, for example when symptoms do not match the sensor readings.
