Description
Overview
Olbas Oil is a concentrated blend of aromatic plant oils in a 12 ml bottle. It is an authorised non-prescription medicine in Ireland (licence PA22702/002/001, held by LanesHealth (Ireland) Limited). Its product information lists it for use by inhalation for nasal congestion in adults and children aged 5 years and over, and for external application to unbroken skin for muscular pain and stiffness.
Only 2–3 drops are needed for inhalation: either placed on a tissue and the vapours inhaled, or added to hot water and the vapours inhaled. For external use the directions say to apply it lightly to the area up to three times daily, on unbroken skin only. The drops are never put directly into the nose or mouth and are not swallowed. The active substances are eucalyptus oil, partly dementholised mint oil, cajuput oil, menthol, methyl salicylate, juniper oil and clove oil. A 30 ml bottle is also made.

Things to consider
- Not for children under 5. Do not use on broken skin or if allergic to any ingredient; ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Never put the drops directly into the nose or mouth, and do not swallow; if that happens, or if the oil gets into the eyes, wash thoroughly and seek immediate medical advice.
- Hot water can scald: keep it out of children’s reach and supervise children closely during vapour inhalation.
- It is a medicine: always read the label and leaflet, and consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms do not improve or get worse.
