Description
Before you replace a mattress, a topper is the cheaper experiment. This one from The Foam People is a 1-inch layer of memory foam in a zipped CoolMax cover, sized for a 2ft6 small single (75 × 190 cm), the narrow UK size often found on guest beds.
What a 1-inch layer can and can’t do
Memory foam shapes itself around you, so the shoulders and hips sink in a little while the lower back gets filled in. At 1 inch, this is the slimmest version the company makes; it adds a subtle softer layer rather than changing the bed completely. It won’t fix a mattress that’s sagging or worn out, because it simply follows whatever is underneath. The same topper comes in 2 and 3 inch depths, and in sizes up to super king, listed separately.
The cover
CoolMax fabric is moisture-wicking and breathable, meant to help regulate temperature and keep you cooler and drier, which matters with memory foam because it can trap heat. The cover zips on and off.
Staying put
An anti-slip base and elastic straps hold the topper on the mattress so it doesn’t creep toward the floor overnight. It’s lightweight and easy to move, and works on a variety of mattresses.
Check before ordering
- Measure your mattress. This variant is 75 × 190 cm only.
- Think about what you want: a gentle change suits 1 inch; a bigger change in feel may need a deeper topper.
- If back or neck pain is ongoing or severe, talk to a clinician about what kind of sleep surface suits you, especially if pain wakes you at night or comes with numbness.
If stiff mornings are a pattern, the free Pain Check-Up can help you find what’s behind them, and the sleep, fatigue and energy groups are full of people trying to sleep better with pain.
